"International Day of Action against the Commercialization of Education"

Since a few activists interested in the international day of action on Nov.5th recenlty joined the mailing list of this blog I am publishing some latest developments here.

Let me begin with a short update: Groups in about seventeen countries (among which are England, Germany, France, Spain, Argentina, Croatia, the U.S. of A., Canada, Liberia, Australia, Egypt and Ireland) have confirmed their participation. Currently activists are working to get in touch with groups in Chile and Italy. Others on the Philippines, Austria and Israel are considering to join the day of action. "Greetings of Solidarity" are being arranged among various groups before (to mobilize) and during Nov.5th using Skype.
We agreed on using the following slogan to be displayed during protests around the world on that day: "One World - One Struggle; Education is Not for Sale!". Groups are also encouraged to make use of the following second slogan: "In Solidarity with struggling students - Worldwide!"

These tools activists have established to help co-ordinate the day of action as well as get together and exchange information:

  • Official homepage + a forum (emancipating-education-for-all.org), created by two IT amateurs (from France and Germany); but it will hopefully be enough to serve its purpose.

  • Different facebook groups:
A general group for all activists: "International Students Movement for Free and Emancipating Education" with more than 3,400 members.
And two local groups: activists preparing protests for Nov.5th in Croatia and the United Kingdom.
  • A mobilization video was made by another activist (in Germany) and can be viewed in four languages: English, Spanish, Greek, French and Croatian.

  • So far we had four international chat conferences. Activists from ten countries made use of them so far to co-ordinate and discuss the international day of action. The next chat conference is scheduled for coming sunday (Oct.26th). If you are part of a group interested in joining activists around the world on Nov.5th and want to join the next one, then just get in touch with me and I will forward the details to you.

  • A mailing list was created for activists to send updates and exchange info with other activists elsewhere.

  • A poster was designed by activists in England. It might be useful (for participating groups) together with a piece of paper informing about your local action on that day.
