posted Wednesday, 24 May 2006

Greetings surfers!

I recently discovered the Video Google and YouTube tools. After playing around with it for hours I want to share with you my findings.
The following is a list of (music-) clips and videos, most of which are political and/or critical and every single one of them is a must-see.

Enjoy!

Now, let me give you some updates regarding the protests led by students in Germany.

  • 10 000 students, profs, employers, students and supporters protested in Düsseldorf on 16 May. They came together to voice out their opposition to the current 'neo-liberal' reforms by the state government, in particular the plans of introducing tuition fees at unis across the state. The police happened to be exeptionally aggressive during this event as can be heard on this audio tape (German).
  • On 17th May 6 000 students took to the streets in Frankfurt and disrupted traffic flow in the city centre, after managing to block the Autobahn (highway) A66 for over an hour. Five people have been temporarily arrested.
  • On 18th May the Bavarian 'Landtag' passed a law allowing unis to charge students that want to attend them. Fees are planned to be introduced in Summer 2007. Bavaria and Baden-Würtemberg are the only two states (of 16) in Germany  that have abolished independent students representative initiatives (in 1973).
  • Just less than 3 000 protesters marched through Marburg on the 19th March to express their frustration. Nope, the Autobahn was not blocked this time.
  • 20th May: City council of Marburg passes a resolution opposing the introduction of tuition fees for universities.
  • 22nd May: The uni administration building in Marburg was occupied (and still is!) by students, after the president of the Philipps uni Marburg insisted that he will not speak out against the introduction of tuition fees, although the Senat of the uni just clearly voted against it. Uni president Niehaus is negotiating with the students today (24 May). (You guys have my full support. I thank you for your actions and try to support you where I can!) Students from Giessen (a town next to Marburg, that have their own uni) came over to give the occupiers some moral support.

  • 23rd May: Thuringia plans to introduce tuition fees for universities as well. They want to charge students from 2008 onwards.
  • Right at this moment (24th May) thousands of students are protesting across Hessen in Frankfurt, Darmstadt, Wiesbaden and others.

I will post all the pictures to various protests during the up-coming weekend.

~peace~
